I don't know what GDI+ is complaining about though :/ (returning a failing Status::GenericError from Gdiplus::Graphics::DrawString).

I'm just doing this as a volunteer in spare time.)Īdding a glyf table with empty glyphs, a loca table, and a cmap CMAP4 3/1 table will make the font installable and work in Windows 10 (Home edition, version 20H2). (I usually finish a release about a year after it's released at this repo, but there's no promises whatsoever. It's fairly tedious and not very exciting, but the font would look messed up without it. I'm still working on the Oreo designs, because they didn't export perfectly from their native editing program (Adobe Illustrator?) out to SVG format, so there's a lot of clean up work to make them look right. I have Lollipop and Nougat releases, and a mashup of Nougat with Lollipop. Regarding my repo using the Oreo designs vs Nougat, Lollipop, etc. But this is about Windows anyway so that's off-topic a bit.) (And I have no idea what works with Safari. (Colorful fonts like these aren't supported consistently across platforms and across browsers right now.) And it probably only works okay with Edge (I think some of the emoji get distorted and end up looking weird.) My repo's font does work fine with Firefox. But I don't think the font from my repo works with Chrome.

My repo's font is easier to deal with on Windows, for now, since Windows will install it no problem. (Hence this whole issue we're commenting on right now.) But Windows won't install this repo's font, last I checked, so it's not very useful unless you can somehow get around that. This repo's font, if I recall, generally works well with Chrome. This repo's font works better in some places (especially recent GNOME-based Linux distros). This repo that we're commenting in is focused on building a PNG-based font. Microsoft has made it clear that it doesn’t plan on bringing this new emoji to Windows 10.Well, I made that repo that mentioned, so I can comment on that.

We’re still expecting 3D and animated versions of these Fluent emoji to appear in products like Microsoft Teams, but if you want the new emoji in Windows then you’ll need to upgrade to Windows 11. While Apple uses bitmaps to render its emoji, Microsoft uses a vector format which is far more scalable and has file size benefits if emoji are flatter.

The lack of 3D could be related to technical limitations of Microsoft’s color font format that the company uses to display emoji inside Windows. It’s not clear if we’ll ever see the impressive 3D emoji inside Windows 11 that Microsoft demonstrated earlier this year.

“We still offer an assortment of emojis for Windows 10 customers.” This same blog post still points out that Microsoft “opted for 3D designs over 2D and chose to animate the majority of our emoji.” Microsoft’s new emoji was supposed to be more 3D.

“The new emoji style is only available in Windows 11 and is 2D,” explains Microsoft in a quiet update to its design blog from July. The emoji have also been redesigned to include bright and saturated colors, but lack the 3D aspects that made them pop. The new emoji in Windows 11 includes the return of Clippy, as Microsoft has replaced the standard paperclip emoji with its Clippy character. While it’s a totally new style, it’s not the 3D look that Microsoft previously promised - the company opted for 2D instead. A new optional update for the OS is rolling out that includes a number of important bug fixes and the new emoji Microsoft previewed earlier this year. Microsoft is making its Fluent-style emoji available in Windows 11 this week.
